Coming soon... Needles SS18
Needles has been Tokyo’s best-kept secret for a minute now; not anymore though. Keizo Shimizu’s label brings deadstock drip and an affinity for the off-kilter to the main stage.
Shimizu has been making moves since the 1980s, taking advantage of Japan’s fetish for vintage USA made gear by importing through his distribution company Nepenthes. By the 90s Shimizu had relocated to the US and used his years treasure-hunting through deadstock denim and surplus military materials to develop Needles. Now a bonafide empire, Needles includes Sportswear and Rebuild pieces that mix American classics with Japanese culture to create diverse, eccentric, expertly crafted pieces.
After reworking Ivy-league classics last year, Shimizu’s love of Americana takes a different route for SS18. Channelling free lovin’ Woodstock vibes, the collection repurposes laid-back leopard prints, paisleys and vintage fits. Needles hotly coveted two-piece tracksuit gets a velour rework, decorated with Butterfly embroidery inspired by the chest ink Steve McQueen sported in the 1973 prison escape flick Papillion.
