New in... A.P.C. AW16
Starting in 1987 as a rebellious label founded by Jean Touitou, a self-confessed “revolutionary militant” operating outside the traditional structures of Parisian fashion, A.P.C. now embodies the effortless chic of the French capital. The brand’s minimalist aesthetic was initially a reaction to the hedonistic consumption of the late 1980s but is now imitated by a host of other brands.
But Tunisian-born Touitou embraces these paradoxes, he grew up a left-wing revolutionary who despised money, and now heads up a fashion label with stores ranging from London to New York. “I am comfortable (with his current position) because I did not betray my search for beauty,” he told the Guardian in 2015.
That beauty can be seen throughout A.P.C.’s latest menswear and womenswear collections, blending elements of workwear, oversized outerwear and elegant basics. It is not an eye-catching, conventional beauty that Toitou provides, but it is one that is distinctly unique to A.P.C. and, nearly three decades on, still just as compelling.
